Long, extended winters, isolated farms and the legendary patience and stubbornness of the people here was the perfect formula for making the Jura Mountains a hotbed of expertise in meticulousness and precision.

The religious dimension was also added to this equation, with pilgrims who, from the 6th century onwards, flocked to the Abbey of Saint-Claude and boosted the production of religious objects made from horn and turned wood. This context was ideal for the emergence of a new activity: the production of wooden toys and games. Initially aimed at the pilgrims’ children, over the centuries wooden toys became an authentic speciality, going far beyond the religious and local market! Between 1920 and 1930, craft workshops starting manufacturing at an industrial pace. This boom became a permanent fixture with the arrival of plastics and moulding processes between 1950 and 1960.

The Forest House“, “Toby the Dog” and “Rosy the Cow“… Legendary toys made in their thousands were all conceived here in the heart of the Jura Mountains. These are mountains where traditional skills and creative magic abound. From turned wood, coloured varnish, poetry and imagination, toys made here have eternal charm. Delightfully retro, surprisingly contemporary. Traditional or modern, handmade from wood or high-tech, the Jura Mountains remain one of Father Christmas’ major European workshops. It’s certainly worth a detour to the toy museum in Moirans-en-Montagne
