A Perfect Setting for Discovering Courbet’s Work

Established in the town of Ornans, in the Hôtel Hébert, the 18th century residence where the painter was born, the new Musée Courbet stretches out along the Loue river and boasts a hanging garden that preserves the authenticity and atmosphere of bygone years.

 A Rich Collection of Paintings

The permanent collection comprising some 75 works provides a full panorama of the periods in the painter’s life. From his training in Ornans through his Bohemian years spent in Paris and onto his self-imposed exile in Switzerland, the works of Gustave Courbet are an intimate reflection of his extraordinary journey. Visitors now have the chance to see one of the artist’s masterpieces “Chêne de Flagey“, which was recently acquired.

Strong Links between Courbet and Franche-Comté Region

Gustave Courbet worshipped the Comté scenery: the history of the local heritage, its culture and traditions are imbued in his works. He said, “You must know a landscape to paint it.” The museum in Ornans therefore offers an opportunity to discover the link between his homeland and his art. To extend the trip, a visit to the Loue Valley is a must, in particular the source of the Loue River which was a frequent source of inspiration to the painter.
