Loop 2: Loop of the Val d'Amour

-

This route is aptly named, combining the immensity of the Chaux forest, the Loue valley and historic villages in a gentle universe.
La Vieille Loye is the only inhabited place in the Chaux forest, an immense state forest of 22,000 hectares. It was in a glass factory in the 18th century that the clavelin, the 62cl bottle containing the precious Vin Jaune, was created. Entirely turned towards the forest, the village is a hub for the Baraques du 14 (former charcoal makers' houses), the guidon columns and... the deer that you need to know how to spot. The route leaves the forest of Chaux to reach Chissey-sur-Loue and the 13th century church of Saint-Christophe with its "baboons", grotesque figures that adorn the interior cornice. Continue to Cramans on the banks of the Loue with a recommended stopover at the superb royal saltworks of Arc-et-Senans built in the 18th century by the architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. The route partly follows the banks of the Loue as far as Port-Lesney. This looping river has left its mark on the life of the region, with rafters transporting wood and mills using the water...
From Mouchard, a town renowned for its national wood college, the road follows a forest before entering the gently undulating landscape as far as La Ferté, where you can taste a very good local beer. Time to cross the state forest of Argençon and it is the arrival at Ounans and Montbarrey, last village before the forest of Chaux.
