Loop 24: the gentle slope

-

This 46km family trail at the foot of the Revermont follows the course of the streams, skirts the forests, and looks out over the vineyards in a gentle and pleasant landscape. It bears its name so well!
Poligny, nestled under the rock and the Dan cross, whose origin is not really known, is a surprising city. It is a place of history, with a plethora of listed or registered monuments: the 11th century church of Mouthier le Vieillard, the 15th century collegiate church of Saint-Hyppolyte, the Jacobins church which has become the cellar of the wine cooperative, the 17th century convents of the Clarisses and the Ursulines... It is also the capital of Comté cheese - the largest PDO cheese in France with 55,000 tonnes produced each year - where thousands of cheeses produced in the 31 Jura cheese dairies are matured. A visit to the cellars is recommended. Finally, it is an agri-food site in the heart of the vineyards, with the ENILBIO (national school for the dairy industry) and the Hyacinthe Friant national technical school for hoteliers.
From Tourmont, the route wanders between streams, crosses fields where Montbeliarde cows graze, goes deep into the woods and multiplies the small... and large monuments. Brainans dominated by the church of Saint-Barthélémy; La Ferté, its abbey and its county dairy; Molamboz and its two castles; Vadans and the keep of an ancient castle; Grozon and its oratory. Return along the edge of the vineyards via Tourmont to Poligny.
