Loop 11: In Bresse-Revermont

-

Between hedgerows and ponds, the Bresse region of the Jura licks the first hills of the Revermont. A world of incredible natural wealth, between land and water, dotted with typical villages.
On the Aire d'autoroute du Jura, built in 1998, the Pavillon des Cercles and the Porte de Bourneville are nods to the Louis XV architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. Then, it is the beginning of an epic journey which passes in turn Arlay, a winegrowing village dominated by an 18th century castle and the ruins of a 13th century fortress, Quintigny, Ruffey-sur-Seille and Desnes, the gateway to the Jura and Burgundy Bresse. The crossing of Bletterans, a small but very active town, is followed by a stroll between the ponds as far as Commenailles, Chaumergy and Deux Fays where the Maison des Etangs eco-museum retraces the history of these former marshes transformed by the monks and which today harbour such a wide variety of flora and fauna that 80% of the Jura's ponds are classified as a Natura 2000 zone!
The tour continues through Sellières, Cité de Caractère de Bourgogne Franche-Comté, Baudin and its forge museum before climbing to the tower of Toulouse le Château where the view over the Bresse is superb. Before returning to Aire du Jura, the itinerary goes along the Boisson pond and the Monseigneur pond.
