Loop 23: Tour of the reculées de la Haute Seille

-

This route through Vin Jaune country offers the very best of the Jura: three typical remote villages, some of the most beautiful in France, the vineyards of Château-Chalon and the abbey of Baume les Messieurs. It's a wonderful trip through the land of Vin Jaune and Comté.
Leaving Voiteur, the only difficulty is the Château-Chalon hill (a remarkable climb), but it's a big one! 200m of ascent over 4km to reach the "rock" via the RD5, where the winegrowers' houses of Château-Chalon dominate the Bresse plain as far as the Burgundy mountains. The narrow streets, viewpoints and church are well worth a visit. Further on, between Granges-de-Ladoye and La Marre, the road overlooks the remote areas of Ladoye and Blois-sur-Seille, sculpted by water and wind. Here, the plateau breaks into a void.
At Granges-sur-Baume, there is an exceptional view of the Baume-les-Messieurs ravine and its 10th-century Cluniac abbey, surrounded 200 metres below by a wall of cliffs. The RD70 then twists and turns down to the village and runs quietly alongside the Dard, then the Seille, through the wine-making village of Nevy-sur-Seille and on to Voiteur, leaving the famous Puits Saint-Pierre vineyards on the right as they climb up to Château-Chalon.
