Loop 25: Loop of Oh!

-

This moderately difficult itinerary mixes coombes, forests, peat bogs, cliffs and valleys of the Haut-Jura. It also offers a breathtaking view of a railway line that defies gravity.
From the Morbier campsite, the road climbs through the Combe Froide to the Marais, the starting point of the cross-country ski trails in winter. The landscape is typical of the Haut-Jura with sparse houses, bordered by forests in the heart of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park. The road then runs between the spruce trees to the edge of the Haut-Doubs. In this sector, the forest covers two thirds of the territory!
Suddenly, the space opens up again to the Chapelle des Bois plateau (1100m altitude), the Lac des Mortes and the Bellefontaine lake. The road goes around a peat bog, a meticulously protected area where the fauna and flora specific to wetlands thrive. After passing through the small winter sports resort of Bellefontaine, the route follows the small stream of Evalude from where you can discover the Hirondelles railway line with its dizzying tunnels and viaducts to the town of Morez, the French capital of eyewear.
Return to Morbier on the RN5.
