Loop 3: Tour of the Jura plain

-

This 70km route takes in the Bresse region of the Jura, then the cereal-growing plain of the Finage, separated by the river Doubs. A region of hedgerows, valleys, woods... and history.
From Chaussin, the villages follow one another: Saint-Baraing on the banks of the Servotte pond; Rahon and its castle, destroyed three times by the kings of France; Villers-Robert, childhood home of Marcel Aymé, author of La Jument Verte... This northern part of the Jura Bresse region is dotted with forests, lakes and hedged farmland, preserved by the Bresse des étangs Natura 2000 area and the Ile du Girard National Reserve. A rural land, it is also steeped in legends that have spanned the centuries. The "Vouivre" is there, lurking in the evening...
As you approach the Doubs, the landscape changes. The castle of Neublans dominates the river on the east bank, while opposite, Petit Noir stands alongside the dead river Vieux Doubs. Crossing the Finage, the Doubs' 186km² alluvial plain, via Annoire and Saint-Loup - which boasts a Marian grotto replica of the one in Lourdes - the route passes Champdivers, a village razed to the ground in the 15th century by Louis XI's troops, before reaching Chaussin in a flat landscape of brown and grey soil marked by huge cereal fields. In Chaussin, stop off at the Taron mill for a taste of the local speciality, gaudes!
