Loop 5: On the trail of the Loup Garou

-

This route is only suitable for experienced cyclists, and although it does involve some steep climbs, that's the price you have to pay for discovering the banks of the Doubs, Acey Abbey and the Serre massif, the quintessence of the Nord-Jura.
In the 16th century, werewolves, half-real and half-fantasy characters, haunted the countryside of the Vallée de l'Ange on nights when the moon was full. They could travel astonishing distances to find their prey. That's the spirit of this 57km trail, which alternates between gentleness and peace, mystery and strength.
The first part, from Rochefort-sur-Nenon - at the heart of Jura river tourism - to Pagney, follows the peaceful banks of the Doubs, the white cliffs, the Rhone-Rhine canal on Eurovéloroute 6, Orchamps and the Arne forest, Gendrey before giving way to a second, much more eventful part from Pagney and the climb up to Vitreux. This is an opportunity to take a look at Acey Abbey, the most northerly abbey in the Jura. Founded in 1136, it boasts magnificent contemporary stained glass windows and is still home to a community of Cistercian-Trappist monks. Between Saligney and Amange, the granite massif of La Serre towers more than 100m above the whole region, where the 37 crosses pattées (the arms of the cross are splayed) that have been recorded to date are scattered and retain all their mystery.
