EuroVelo 6 is a European cycle route forming part of a vast development project. Covering a distance of 4,450 km in its entirety, it links France and Romania. Crossing Central Europe, the route runs from the western Atlantic Ocean to the Black Sea, following the course of three of the continent's largest rivers. The cycle route crosses ten countries in all.
You'll start by cycling along the Rhone-Rhine canal, before heading off to Montbéliard, a town steeped in history. You can pedal peacefully along the waters of the Doubs, discovering historic Comtois towns such as Baume-les-Dames, where pleasure boats dot the banks and hills.
You can stop off at Besançon, a city steeped in history, where a remarkable theatre of greenery invites you to relax. You'll follow the winding Doubs valley, discovering ancient villages and small ports, until you reach the emblematic St-Jean-de-Losne, where the atmosphere of the boats marks the imperceptible transition to Burgundy.
You will then continue your journey, revealing Burgundy in all its natural and cultural splendour.
You'll continue your journey along the Saône, exploring the côtes de Beaune and Santenay, where the Burgundy hills unveil their prestigious vineyards.
You'll continue your journey along the Bourbince river, discovering the Renaissance château of Digoine and passing iconic Charolais cows.
You'll follow the Canal Latéral à la Loire through the spa town of Bourbon-Lancy, where the route stretches along a former railway line. You'll admire the Château de Saint-Aubin-sur-Loire dominating the Bourbonnais mountains, then travel along the Canal du Nivernais, discovering the charming canal town of Decize.
You'll explore pastoral landscapes and authentic villages, passing through the Acolin lock, the Fleury-sur-Loire boat stop, and the towpath of the Canal Latéral à la Loire, offering panoramic views of the river and its city of the Dukes of Burgundy.
