Exhibition "Marcel Prunier. Drawing the Roaring Twenties

-

At the start of the Roaring Twenties, Marcel Prunier embarked on an artistic adventure. Born in Paris in 1897, he moved to Le Havre a few years later, where he studied at the École des Beaux-arts. Enlisted in the First World War, he met Charles Clerc, who became his friend and patron, and with whom he kept up a rich correspondence.
These letters, now held by the Besançon Municipal Library, tell us about Marcel Prunier's artistic friendships in Paris and his festive lifestyle.
A regular in ballrooms and dance halls, but also in bars and street corners, these places were his favourite subjects. He sketches a whole gallery of characters, "humanities that sing and cry", whose souls and hearts he tries to locate in his drawings. From the undulating body of Josephine Baker to the deeply moving faces of those he called his "leek traders", Marcel Prunier strove to capture the movements of both body and spirit.
