ANNULÉ - Marché aux truffes à Saint Champ

-

Opening with the bell at 11 am! There will be a refreshment bar, toast with truffle butter and a giant truffle omelette! Enter the tombola to win 3 magnificent Bugey truffles. In the good years, between 1800 and 1900, several tonnes of truffles were traded on the Belley market. The truffle trade disappeared over the years, but has recently been revived by a group of enthusiastic truffle-growers, who have now formed a truffle-growers' union. Today, there are 80 hectares of truffle plantations, made up of several species of tree whose roots have been mycorhised in order to sow the land with truffles. We know that the truffle ecosystem is very fragile, requiring light, water, chalky soil, ants and worms. It's also a lesson in patience, as it takes an average of 10 years for truffles to develop. Every year in Saint-Champ, right in the heart of the vineyards, a market is organised before the Christmas festivities. Reserved for private individuals, it follows an unchanging ritual. As production is small, the first to arrive are the first to be served.
