On 27 July 1825, a fire broke out in Salins-les-Bains. Fanned by the wind, in less than two hours almost the entire town went up in flames.
Neighbouring towns and villages, as far away as Besançon, came to lend a hand, bringing "fire pumps" and donations to the destitute people of Salins.
On that fateful day, 306 of the town's houses went up in smoke.
The King released 389,700 francs in aid, in addition to donations from French, Italian and Swiss towns, to help rebuild the town.
In 2025, the town of Salins-les-Bains will commemorate the bicentenary of the great fire of 1825. To mark the occasion, exhibitions, events and conferences will be held in the town.
