Reading Nights: From 23 to 26 January 2025
The Reading Nights are back for a 9th edition on the theme of heritage.
The public will be invited to gather at thousands of physical and digital events around the theme of heritage.
This theme refers first and foremost to the literature of the intimate: to the heritage bequeathed to us by our forebears, to what has been passed down to us, or not, through the generations and which the author chooses to evoke in his or her work: a body, possessions (including books), a culture, sometimes traumas, heritage understood as our family's own history, real or constructed, constantly updated.
Heritage is also collective, the product of a shared heritage that can be measured on the scale of a territory, a nation and, in some cases, the whole of humanity. Literature is both a component of this heritage and a way of bringing it to life.
It nurtures tangible cultural heritage, through the transmission of exceptional libraries, and intangible heritage, shaping our knowledge, our representations and our know-how. A part of literature and its writers can become "heritage", and our contemporary authors will constitute the heritage of tomorrow.
Finally, heritage, as a place or building of archaeological, artistic, cultural, scientific, intellectual, religious or natural interest, whether it's a historic monument, a village church or a nature park, can be a wonderful playground for authors and readers alike. These 9th Reading Nights are also an opportunity to organise meetings and readings in the heritage sites that inspire you and the authors!
Created in 2017 by the Ministry of Culture to celebrate the pleasure of reading, the Nuits de la lecture have won over an ever-growing audience over the years.
