Courbet examined in the laboratory: the example of the self-portraits

-

Around the exhibition 'Devenir Courbet' at the Musée Courbet
With Bruno Mottin, Honorary General Curator of Heritage, in charge of technical painting studies at the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France (C2RMF), Paris

Courbet often left it up to others to interpret them; he often modified his paintings as he went along; his technique changed and varied according to the subject depicted. In fact, a simple examination of his works with the naked eye is often insufficient to measure their significance. This talk will show how the instruments developed by museum laboratories provide information for understanding the art of this major mid-nineteenth-century artist.
