Copies ? Copying?"
What is a copy? A fake? Rarely. An imitation? Sometimes. An interpretation? More often than not. A copy is a more or less faithful reproduction of an original work of art, made for a more or less obvious purpose. A work of art can be copied for very different reasons: to learn to paint or sculpt, to imitate a famous artist, to make fun of a well-known work by hijacking it - or, on the contrary, to pay homage to it. Sometimes, artists even copy their own works. This exhibition looks at the idea of "copying", which has existed since Antiquity and has been an enduring success, from reproduction to misappropriation. As part of this craze, the Musée de Dole organises an annual Copyists' Night, which attracts both amateur and professional artists.
