Exhibition by Carolina Fonseca / I Rumour, We Rumble
Born in 1987, Carolina Fonseca is a French-Colombian artist who lives and works in Besançon, where she is one of the residents of the Ateliers Vauban. In this exhibition, Carolina Fonseca's works evoke anachronism and hybridity, or more precisely the fusion between humans and animals or plants. In this sense, like Abdessamad El Montassir, whose exhibition is in dialogue with her own, she is committed to a memorial exploration of non-Western cultures to highlight the osmosis between all living beings and their original interdependence, in other words the fundamental link that unites human beings with nature, the earth and all entities, animate or otherwise, and its permanence over time.
"By imagining different ways of relating, I am evoking a new economy, a different way of caring, a different way of understanding the land and a respect for multiple temporalities." Carolina Fonseca
Carolina Fonseca is developing her work in drawing and sculpture, the two being intrinsically linked.
Among her many sources of inspiration, she borrows from traditional cultures, and some of her works are reminiscent of primitive African or pre-Columbian art*. She revisits their zoomorphic whistles and anthropomorphic vases and containers. She turns them into clay sculptures, modifying their shape and sometimes their scale, and gives them a utilitarian dimension in ritual-like performances. Carolina Fonseca's bird-beak-shaped ocarina sculptures, for example, are worn like masks and activated by two people to make what sound like alarms, birdsong and animal breaths. Similarly, her head-shaped bowl-sculptures will become receptacles for food shared with the audience in another performance.
