Heinrich Franz Biber, the undisputed master of the violin in the 17th century, revolutionised the way the instrument was played, gradually imposing a technique and chords previously considered impossible - the scordatura. The work Harmonia Artificiosa, the last left by the composer, is a perfect illustration of this, and was echoed by other composers such as Corelli and Schütz, whose works are brought together here in a magnificent programme of sonatas performed by the Lyon-based ensemble Les Nouveaux Caractères.
