National campaign 100 works that tell the climate story
"The Trout" painted by Gustave Courbet

The dramatic nature of Gustave Courbet's "The Trout", painted on his return to Franche-Comté after his imprisonment in 1871 for his involvement in the Commune, has always been seen and understood as a representation of the painter himself.
These imposing specimens populating the Loue, the river that gave birth to the Ornans master, could not be a better symbol of the painter rooted in his "country".
Presented as part of the museum's permanent exhibition, in a new scenography, the work has become a forum for discussion and debate on the ecological problems facing the Loue and, more generally, the region's aquatic environments.

In partnership with the Musée d'Orsay

To mark this exceptional loan, a rich programme of events is being organised on all the Courbet sites.

100 works that tell the climate story
Each year, the Musée d'Orsay selects 100 works from its collections to display throughout France, highlighting a major contemporary theme. In 2025, the climate is in the spotlight: a dialogue between art and science is on offer in 31 museums, accompanied by a reference book to explore the major ecological issues of our time.
