"Les Trois Tchoum (2021) is a film by Michel Neyroud and Arsène Kapikian. After migrating three hundred kilometres from the lower Ob plain in the Yamalo-Nenets autonomous okrug (the far north of the Russian Federation), the three brothers of the Venengo clan, from the northern Khanty, have settled for the summer in the mountains of the polar Urals. Under their large conical tents, known as tchoum, the women look after their young children and sew fur boots and coats for the coming winter. Despite the bad weather, the men look after the herd of around a thousand reindeer in the high valleys and peaks. The good humour of the herders on the tundra and the work of the women in the leather trade do not resonate with the declining pessimism of the television media: happiness is present every day in the lives of young and old alike. On the contrary, new inventions (PCs, walkie-talkies, satellite telephones, washing machines) are integrated into the family community's better life together.

This film is the first part of the documentary tetralogy "The Venengo Clan", devoted to the invisible world of the Khanty people of the Siberian Arctic and their nomadic life as reindeer herders.

Michel Neyroud is a geographer, cartographer and documentary filmmaker. A secondary school teacher, since 2007 he has been interested in the more or less visible fringe communities of northern Asia.

Arsène Kapikian is a French film-maker, composer and music teacher, known for his many documentaries.
