The Montavoix is a guarded refuge, which means that it is only open when the guard is on site. The refuge is not accessible by car. The Montavoix is a very simple, very rustic refuge: there is no electricity (only two solar panels for minimal LED lighting), there is no running water (only a spring 150 metres from the refuge).
There is a minimal kitchen with a wood cooker (no refrigerator), a dining room with a wood stove and a dormitory, uninsulated, unheated for twelve people. There are two dry toilets.
In the emergency shelter (a collection space to shelter passers-by in case of fire) there are two basic showers: the passers-by carry themselves (if available) the hot water (to be heated on the stove or in solar bags) and the cold water, and then take the waste water down to the phyto-washing system; only biodegradable products are allowed and are provided free of charge by the caretaker; the emergency shelter can also be used to dry wet clothes.
The refuge is not a gîte or a bed and breakfast. The guarded passage refuge Le Montavoix [the mountain with a voice or voices] is part of a 27-hectare plot of land called Le Montavoies [the mountain with paths].
