White water, still water

-

Impressive waterfalls or intermittent cascades, deep gorges or small lakes: water is present throughout the route. Before supplying electricity, it powered mills, sawmills, forges, spectacle factories... The Langouette gorges were carved out by the river Saine, creating a canyon 47 m deep. You'll wander between potholes, jumps and waterfalls in a sumptuous landscape.

At the "Le Martinet" sign, leave the car park and cross the bridge. Climb the steps to the left and follow the path along the gorge. At the top of the car park, turn left (Chemin des Cascades) and join the D127 as you leave the village. Turn right onto the D127.

At "Girrod", turn left towards "Malvaux" and climb a tarmac and then stone path. Cross the D127. From the car park, head towards "Lac à la Dame" and follow the winding path for around 500 m. Go right up through the woods until you reach a fork in the road. Turn right and follow the meadow along the edge of the wood. Continue along the path up into a beech forest, skirting a stream and then crossing it on the right over a ford made of large stones.

Walk along a meadow, climb into the woods and follow a farm track to "La Senge" and then to "Lac à la Dame". This fish-filled lake is rich in flora. Turn left to reach the hamlet of Fumey. At the crossroads, cross the D62 and take the stone path down to Foncine-le-Bas. In the village, turn left onto the D127, cross it to a square called "le champs de Mars" and follow a small road towards the "Viaduc des Douanets".

Cross the viaduct and follow the signs for the Gorges de Malvaux. Go through a 180 m tunnel and then another viaduct (on your right is the Bief de la Ruine waterfall). Follow the old tram route through the forest. At "sous Bayard", continue straight on until you reach a crossroads. Turn left and head down towards Les Planches-en-Montagne, signposted "Canal Usine Fumey-Badoz". Enter the village along the Chemin des Chamois.

At the "le lavoir" crossroads, turn right towards the town hall, go down and turn left to reach the starting point.
