The GR 59 from Dole to St Jean d'Etreux

-

Coming from the Ballon d'Alsace, this GR crosses the Jura department from north to south over 225km through the Revermont vineyards. From Dole, the birthplace of Louis Pasteur, or from Salins-les-Bains to Saint-Jean d'Etreux (next to Saint-Amour), this GR crosses the Jura vineyards, passing through some of the most beautiful towns in the department: Salins-les-Bains, Arbois, Poligny, Lons-le-Saunier, Saint-Amour, Château-Chalon and Baume-les-Messieurs...

The GR59 from Dole to Lons-le-Saunier is also the first part of the Echappée Jurassienne, which then climbs to the first plateau to join the Pays des Lacs and the Haut-Jura via the GR559.
Along the way, hikers will be able to visit two UNESCO sites: the Royal Saltworks of Arc et Senans (25) and the Great Saltworks of Salins-les-Bains. They will also be able to stroll through the Burgundy Franche-Comté towns of character of Arbois, Poligny and Salins-les-Bains, as well as marvel at 2 of the Most Beautiful Villages in France: Baume-les-Messieurs and its 9th century abbey, and Château-Chalon, the capital of the Vin Jaune.
Hikers will also enjoy an invigorating break at the tuff waterfalls of Baume-les-Messieurs or Les Planches-près-Arbois, or a gourmet break in one of the Comté cheese dairies or in one of the winegrowers' cellars.
Finally, the charm of the small winegrowing villages of the South Revermont, the succession of remote areas with impressive viewpoints and the bucolic paths between vineyards, pastures and riverbanks will finish by seducing hikers.
