The Sauline Park is the starting point for the two trails and is a favourite place for the people of Dolomites to go for a walk and watch the wild boar or the sika deer in two large parks.
Between the large forest paths, also known as "sommières" or forest roads, and winding paths, you will get a glimpse of the second largest state-owned hardwood forest in France (22,000 hectares in one piece). Rich in a history linked to the human exploitation of wood, which constituted an inexhaustible reserve of fuel for the furnaces and forges, the local population lived from its production of pottery, ceramics, glassware, boiler making and ironwork. Today, we are rediscovering this marvellous forest and the traces of this ancient history, whose famous guidon columns (listed as Historic Monuments in October 2009) are a reminder that the Arc-et-Senans Saltworks is nearby. A fairy-tale forest because of the tales and legends that arose from its mysteries (it is said that a few "fouletots" can still be seen partying under the ferns in the evening).
It is also extraordinary for the richness of its fauna and flora, hence its classification as a Natura 2000 site.
