Abbaye de Gigny
Come and marvel at the architecture and history of Gigny Abbey. This remarkable Romanesque monument was founded around 890 by Bernon. Together with the brothers from Baume les Messieurs, he went on to create the prestigious Cluny Abbey. The church of Gigny was associated with the great Christian movement of the 10th century. Among others, the future Pope Julius II was the prior in command.
After 5 years of work, including the rear façade and roof, excavations have revealed some ancient levels! Information panels have been installed to help visitors better understand this important heritage site. A guide booklet is available for young visitors (available from the town hall and in the church).
A "heritage trail", created by ADAPEMONT, shows how the abbey structured today's village.
The abbey is open every day of the year, generally from 9am to 6.30pm. In winter, opening times are reduced and the abbey closes at 6pm.
