Built on a rocky outcrop, the Arguel castle dominates the Doubs valley above Besançon. Its geographical situation has made it a strategic place of the first rank. Having probably had a watchtower role from the Gallo-Roman period on the Rome-Vesontio axis, the site became a seigniory (castle and town) at the end of the 11th century under the powerful lords of Arguel - one of them was Archbishop of Besançon from 1109 to 1117.
