Lake Chalain: the Jura's natural jewel

The largest natural lake in the Jura, Lac de Chalain attracts many visitors every year from all over Europe, as well as local residents. All come to enjoy its crystal-clear waters, perfect for a multitude of water sports activities. A veritable natural magnet, the lake's beauty and emerald hues are awe-inspiring.

To admire all its splendour, the belvedere at Fontenu is an ideal vantage point. From the village of Doucier, the gateway to the estate, accessible via the D39, we follow the signs for the Hérisson waterfalls. From there, take the D90 and follow the signs up to Fontenu, on the second plateau.

There is a car park and picnic area with picnic tables and a children's play area. Opposite the town hall, a signpost clearly indicates access to the belvedere.
Signposted footpaths start from the site, with loops of between 5 and 15 km and a moderate gradient.

The "Belvédères du lac de Chalain" itinerary takes in other viewpoints, such as "sous roches" and "du château", before returning to the main path.
