Besançon

Besançon

-

Besançon, the capital of Franche-Comté, has preserved its ancient architectural heritage.

The old town, surrounded by the loop of the Doubs, itself surrounded by seven hills, is dominated by the prestigious Vauban citadel. The Roman triumphal arch (Porte Noire), the Saint-Jean cathedral, the palace built in the 16th century for Granvelle, chancellor of Charles V, the theatre built by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux in 1780, the Saint-Jacques hospital, the Town Hall... one could not end with listing the architectural treasures of the town where Victor Hugo and the Lumière brothers were born.

The private mansions, the quays of the Doubs, the astronomical clock, the collections of the Fine Arts Museum (Boucher, Fragonard, Courbet, etc.) and the cultural life of a historical and university town give tourists even more reasons to extend their stay. Since 2002, the Musée du Temps, housed in the sumptuous Palais Granvelle, has been open to visitors, while the Moulin Saint-Paul water stop is a haven of tranquillity in the heart of the city.
