Canal du Rhône au Rhin

-

The idea of linking the Rhône and Rhine basins by inland waterway goes back a long way. Colbert and Vauban mooted the idea under Louis XIV. The project took shape in the 18th century.
It was conceived as a link to connect the seaports of northern Europe with those of the Mediterranean.
This primarily strategic canal became a tourist attraction, and port facilities for river tourism multiplied and developed. The banks of the canal are also gradually being developed as a cycle route, forming part of EuroVelo 6 from the Saône to Basel.

Along the canal, you'll discover marvels of architecture and heritage. The Saint-Philibert church in Tournus, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, will open its doors to you so that you can admire its façade, entrance, nave, frescoes, organ and ornaments.

Louis Pasteur's birthplace in Dole and its Collegiate Church highlight the rich heritage of the town of Dole, its history closely linked to the Christian religion and its most important figures are highlighted through these two sites.

The Besançon Citadel, designed by the great military architect Vauban, is one of the highlights of Besançon's heritage. Overlooking the city with its architectural genius, the citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, houses 3 museums dedicated to protecting and preserving the city's memory, biodiversity and traditions.

All along the route you'll find areas for water sports activities and relaxing moments!

Until the early 20th century, Saint-Jean-de-Losne was an important centre for inland waterway transport. Since 1987, enthusiasts have created three rooms to retrace this history: the Musée de la Batellerie.

The Grotte d'Osselle in Saint-Vit was discovered in the 13th century and organised tours began in the early 16th century. Visitors can see the columns formed by the water and the stone bridge built over the underground river. The first complete cave bear skeleton was found here, propelling it onto the international stage.

The Rhone-Rhine Canal is an ideal choice for a relaxing and rewarding day out!
