Château Chalon and Baume les Messieurs - "Most beautiful villages in France" in the Jura region
These two villages are real gems: Château Chalon, the birthplace of the famous Vin Jaune, seems to stand sentinel on the edge of the Revermont, while Baume les Messieurs is set in its "reculée", a sumptuous geological curiosity.
Château Chalon: Take a guided tour of the village overlooking the vineyards, with its abbey quarter, Romanesque church, belvederes and winegrowers' houses. Then take a free tour of the Maison de la Haute Seille, an oenological showcase: in a historic town house, enjoy a fun and interactive discovery of the Coteaux de la Haute Seille, with video projections, sound testimonies, touch screens, etc. Then your guide will introduce you to tasting the famous Vin Jaune.
Lunch in Baume les Messieurs.
Sample menu
Courgette tartare and fruity Comté cheese
Morteau sausage, mashed potatoes with old-fashioned mustard juice and blueberries
Pana Cotta with fir bud syrup and chocolate
1 bottle of Jura wine for 4 people and coffee
In the afternoon, you will continue with a guided tour of the Abbaye de Baume les Messieurs, a listed historic monument. You will have access to the 3 courtyards, the church, the altarpiece and the Tomb Chapel.
At the end of the day, if you wish, you can continue on to the reculée de Baume les Messieurs: dominated by vertiginous cliffs, this village nestles in the middle of three reculées typical of the Jura landscape, before stopping for a view of the Tuffes waterfall.
