In the Bugey region, as war raged between Savoy and Dauphiné, the Abbot of Ambronay, Amblard de Briord, decided to join the Savoyard side. He was accused of treason! The Dauphin sent his emissaries to seize the Abbey. The Dauphinois disguised themselves as monks, infiltrated the abbot's flats and locked him up in the Archives tower, waiting for dawn before executing him.
