Greater Besançon, an exceptional heritage
A visit to 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites!
From the incredible underground treasures to the two sumptuous Unesco-listed buildings in the Doubs and the astonishing 15-hectare Franc-Comtois ecomuseum, spend a weekend discovering the major sites of Greater Besançon.
Day 1
Lunch in town or at the Besançon Citadel.
Guided tour of the Citadelle*: the genius of Vauban's work can be appreciated from the ramparts, which offer prodigious views of Besançon and the surrounding area. Then free access to the many museums on the site.
Dinner and overnight stay. Accommodation in a hotel***.
2nd day
Guided tour of the Maisons Comtoises open-air museum in Nancray: in a 15-hectare park, around thirty Comtoises houses, dismantled stone by stone on their original site, then rigorously reassembled and furnished.
Lunch.
Guided tour of the Saline Royale: built between 1774 and 1779 by the architect Claude Nicolas Ledoux as a royal factory to exploit the brine from Salins. A unique example of 18th-century industrial architecture, it is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Guided tour of the Grotte d'Osselle: one of the oldest caves in the world to have been visited (since 1504), the Grotte d'Osselle is famous for the beauty of its natural setting.
