L'Aiguayoir

-

Decided on 29 Thermidor of the year XI (18 July 1803) and completed in 1811, the construction of the aiguayoir (on the edge of the main street) is linked to the large fairs in Coligny. The horse-drawn carriages on the "salt route" used to stop in our commune.
The "aiguayoir" is a large basin used for bathing horses, which were immersed in water up to their stomachs to wash and refresh themselves. It is fed by the overflow of the Tilleuls fountain whose clear water comes from the Goubey spring.
It can rise up to one metre in the aiguayoir.
In 1922, long deserted by horses, it was covered with a slab when the War Memorial was built. For decades it was used as a water supply for the Flower Committee. In the spring of 2003, when the monument was moved, the water tank was rediscovered intact. It was immediately restored and secured by the municipality and has since been admired by the inhabitants of Coligny and tourists alike.
In 2006, Andrée Paccaud, president of the Friends of Coligny association and Jean Bernadac, mayor of the commune, had the idea of reviving the aiguayoir. This is how visitors to the old-fashioned Bresse Fair can admire the Comtois horses bathing and snorting happily in their aiguayoir.
