Le château de Bohas

-

Built by the Lords of Buenc in the 14th century, it was enlarged in the 16th and 17th centuries by the addition of the entrance pavilions. The lordship of Buenc was one of the oldest in the area. Today, the square keep of their old castle can still be seen overlooking the village of Bohas (12th century).
Initially on a square plan, the castle of Bohas was defended by four corner towers, one of which, square, served as a keep. Important families owned it, such as the Colignys, the Nancuyzes and, in the 17th century, the Loubats known as "de Bohan". After the throes of the Revolution, it regained its splendour (19th century), thanks in particular to Charles Lacroix, nephew of the founder of the Bonnet silk factory in Jujurieux. The beautiful tree-lined driveway leading to the castle dates from this period and has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1945.
A year earlier, on 17 July 1944, the castle had been set on fire by a column of German troops (about a hundred men), who were looking for "terrorists" at the time. It is true that some time before, the building had housed a group of FFI for about three weeks. Although it was empty when they arrived, the German soldiers punished the beautiful building for its patriotic complicity!
The current owners have set up a rural gîte in the entrance pavilions.
