Le Mont Fier

-

From the top of its 1282m, the Mont Fier, which dominates the village of Prémanon, offers an admirable view of the Orbe valley and the surrounding peaks such as the Dôle and the Noirmont. This summit has the particularity of escaping the rule of the formation of a mountain: it is the unique example of the Jura perched syncline.

Environment
The peregrine falcon: the cliff of Mont Fier is a protected area for the peregrine falcon, which nests there. This falcon is the fastest of the swooping birds of prey. Its tapered wings in the shape of a scythe and its dark colour on the top, gave it the name of peregrine falcon. When flying horizontally, it can reach speeds of up to 185km/h when pursuing prey. But if it dives from a great height to make a swooping capture, it can reach the dizzying speed of 350km/h!

The name "Mont-Fier" is pronounced "Mont fié". The word "fié" seems to be a deformation of an old patois form of Beech (foya) or Fir (fia). For some researchers, "fié" means "wild". In any case, it seems that Mont Fier refers to a wild and wooded area..
