The wars of the 17th century caused Besançon, as in the rest of the province, to lose most of its lay artistic elite. At the same time, there was a rise in the number of religious architects responsible for building convents and churches for the new religious orders that emerged from the Catholic reform. Numerous examples, highlighting the work of these forgotten religious builders, can be discovered in the streets of Besançon's historic centre.
