The wars of the 17th century meant that Besançon, like the rest of the province, lost most of its lay artistic elite. At the same time, the number of religious architects responsible for building the convents and churches of the new religious orders that emerged from the Catholic Reformation increased. Many examples of the work of these forgotten religious builders can be seen in the streets of Besançon's historic centre.
