L'itinéraire des temples du Pays de Montbéliard

-

The booklet "10 temples to discover in the Pays de Montbéliard" invites the curious to discover an architectural heritage that is not very common in France.

Indeed, when you travel around the Montbéliard region, you will discover that the religious buildings that adorn most of the villages are not Catholic churches, but Protestant temples.

They stand in the centre of the village and bear witness to the religious history of this small French-speaking territory governed by German princes. In 1530, the German princes introduced the Protestant Reformation, transforming the old Catholic churches for Protestant worship and building the architectural masterpiece that is the Saint-Martin temple in Montbéliard.

This temple was to become the preferred model for all subsequent buildings. Ten temples have been selected from the 70 Protestant buildings in the region. On pleasant hiking trails, it is proposed to stop at one of these ten temples to discover its history and architecture. This selection offers an overview of the architecture of the temples in Montbéliard over 400 years of religious history.

Enjoy your discovery!
