Patrimoine de la commune de Contrevoz

-

In feudal times, Contrevoz depended on the county of Rossillon. It was "a community of the bailliage, election and subdelegation of Belley" until 1790.
As with many Bugist villages, traces of Roman occupation have been discovered, notably the remains of Roman roads.

The village church is dedicated to Saint Romain. It suffered greatly during the Revolution. Writings from the time state that "the chapel was discovered, the floors were rotten, the bell tower was totally devastated, the roof was in a very bad state...". It was then decided to build a new church on the same site: it was built from 1860 to 1863. It was built from 1860 to 1863 in the neo-Gothic style. It consists of two chapels. The facade is supported by two buttresses rising to the 30-metre high bell tower.

The St. Sebastian's chapel is now destroyed and its exact location is unknown.

The chapel of Saint Anne is small: 10 metres by 5.5 metres. It bears the inscription "this chapel was built and founded by Mr. Jean Millieret, judge of Belley, in execution of a vow made to Sainte Anne with his consent by his wife, Miss Marie Picot, who died in Contrevoz on 3 June 1684".

The Boissieu chapel is now in ruins.

There are two crosses in the commune: that of Boissieu, at the top of the village, bears the inscription "mission of 1898". The one at Préveyzieu, south of the village, bears the name of the Greffe family and the date 1862.

The commune has three washhouses (in Contrevoz, Boissieu and Préveyzieu).

The four ovens (one for the village and three for the hamlets) still exist and are lit during village festivals.

In the hamlet of Boissieu one can see a very beautiful house with mullioned windows and a covered gallery. Some of the other houses still have an old style with old carved stones, smooth bevelled frames or star-shaped lintels.
