Remarkable civil building

Patrimoine du village de Cressin-Rochefort

-

After the conquest in 58 B.C., the Romans flocked to the town and lived in large villas. Some tombs were found, notably that of the King's Bed.
In the 5th century the Burgundians invaded and in the 7th century Bugey became part of Charlemagne's empire. At that time, the Bugey was divided into three parts, the commune of Cressin being in the Lothaire share.
The seigneury of Rochefort appeared in the 12th century and did not disappear until 1793.

After the destruction of the old church of Saint Etienne, the new church was built thanks to numerous donations. The work was completed in 1871 and the bell tower was built a year later. The church in ogival style can be described as one of the most graceful in the Bugey. It has a stone commemorating the Récamier family.

At the crossroads of the C.C.37 and the road leading to Rochefort is a statue of the Virgin Mary. On the base it is written "they have made me their guardian".

There is only one washhouse left in the commune of Cressin-Rochefort. It is located in Parissieu, next to the wall of the Récamier property. It is made up of beautiful washing stones and a beautiful roof.

There are several historic houses in the commune:
- The customs house, which served until 1861 (when the activity disappeared on the population census records). This picturesque house is now in ruins.
- The Chambard house, which is the house that Claude Antoine Récamier gave to the commune to make a school.
- The Château Carpin, which looks like a private mansion, is an exact copy of the one owned by a relative of Marius Carpin in Saint-Cloud.
- The Récamier property where we find the three residences of the family members.
