Patrimoine du village de La Burbanche

-

Evidence of a human presence during the prehistoric and Gallo-Roman periods has been found. Invasions then followed on the territory: from the Huns to the Saracens via the Burgundians. From 1070 to 1601 the Burbanche (like the whole of Bugey) became Savoyard and depended on the House of Savoy.
Two recent events have marked the life of the citizens: the construction of the railways and the construction of the electric church at La Truffière.

The present church of La Burbanche was completed in 1868. This very large church (37 metres long and 14 metres wide) is in the neo-Gothic style. 28 pillars support the walls. It consists of a central nave and two side chapels. The choir is illuminated by five double stained glass windows with ogives.

There are two crosses in the village: the Tare cross, a reminder of a mission, rebuilt in 1953 and the Grange des prés cross, made of wrought iron and bearing the date 1880.

Ferries and fountains are present in all the hamlets of the commune. There were also 6 ovens; two of these were destroyed in the middle of the century.

Some typical old houses (with gable roofs) and farm buildings (with a wooden barn door) still exist in the commune.

The castle of La Burbanche dates from the 16th century. It is a rectangular building with a square tower in the centre.
