Patrimoine du village de Rossillon

-

In 1240 Rossillon was given to Boniface de Savoie (bishop of Belley and archbishop of Canterbury). He was the first lord of Rossillon. The lordship remained in the hands of the counts of Savoy from 1270 to the 16th century. It was then given to Claudine de Bretagne. In 1559 the castle and the village were given to Isabelle de Chalant (wife of the Marquis of Suriana) who sold the land to Lord Laurey of the County of Burgundy. Rossillon then passed to the Lord of Maurilly following Richelieu's declaration of war against the House of Austria.

The old castle of Rossillon was situated on a rock overlooking the village. The statue of the Virgin Mary can now be found there.

The church of Rossillon, on the Joseph-Barrier square, is dedicated to Saint Peter. It has been enlarged by the addition of three side chapels. It has a regular four-sided bell tower.
To the south is the Rosary Chapel, in the flamboyant style (15th century). The walls and vaults are covered with paintings.
To the north, the Chapel of Saint Philip was built in 1837.

The chapel of Egieu is small and simple, with two gables topped with slate roofs. There is a coat of arms representing an animal which could be a goat and a sun above the entrance door.

The former presbytery of Rossillon was occupied until 1914 by the last priest of Rossillon.

The oven at Egieu is close to the Ravière hillside. It has a gable roof, a symmetrical vault of flat stones and a dome-shaped hearth. This oven is still lit once a year during the village festival.

The village washhouse dates from 1902. It is located next to the ruins of the old oven. It is a wash house with two basins. It is built with stones from Contrevoz. A curious element is to be observed: the 17 soap niches dug in the stone. There is also a washhouse at Egieu, at the lowest point opposite the chapel.

There are several remarkable houses in the village:
- The fortified house of the La Forest family: a beautiful 12th century building, this is the former residence of the lord of Rossillon, Guillaume de la Forest.
- The former Juvanon hotel: the date of 1780 is engraved on the facade. The hotel closed its doors in 1947.
- The house known as the "carcan": this building dates from the 15th-16th centuries. Note the beautiful mullioned window opening onto the street.
- The old post house: built in 1798, you can still see its stable which remains unchanged.
- The former gendarmerie: this group of buildings forms a U shape. It dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The gendarmerie was located here until 1934.
