The ancient fortress of Montdidier was built between the 10th and 12th centuries between the present-day departments of Ain and Jura, in the Revermont massif.
The first mention of the castle dates from the 12th century: castrum montis dideri.
Probably an ancient Gallic fortified site during the Iron Age, Montdidier then became a feudal castle during the Middle Ages. As the seat of local power, the castle reached its peak under the rule of the Dukes of Savoy in the 15th century.
In the heart of medieval Europe, the fort was the focus of age-old struggles between France, Burgundy, Savoy and the Holy Roman Empire for territorial domination. These border issues were the direct cause of the castle's fall in the mid-16th century.
As for the village of Montdidier, it was reinvested in the middle of the 19th century until the Second World War.
