In the autumn of 1837, Gustave Courbet left Ornans to become a boarder at the Collège Royal in Besançon. He continued his artistic training with Charles-Antoine Flajoulot, a teacher at the Besançon School of Fine Arts. This stroll through the heart of the town takes in Courbet's early years before he left for Paris in 1839, as well as the painter's relationships with leading figures from the region, including Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Victor Hugo and Max Buchon. The tour ends with a look at the works by Courbet in the Musée des Beaux-arts et d'Archéologie.
