Come and discover the history of Arbois, which is just like the wines the town produces: rich, dense and colourful! On this tour, you'll learn more about the Burgundian origins of Arbois, the strong character of its inhabitants, and the unsuspected supernatural powers of the bells in Saint-Just church. As you wander through the narrow streets and monuments, the tour traces the thousand years of human adventures - sometimes fruitless but always instructive - that have made this Jura wine town famous!
- Poligny "A dieu playse Poligny" tour
duration of visit: approx. 1h30
Poligny, the capital of Comté, the famous cheese of the Franche-Comté region, may well surprise you. Nestling at the end of the Vaux ravine, at the crossroads of trade routes and once sheltered by the Château de Grimont, this town was once of major importance. As you stroll through its streets, you can still make out the traces of its imposing walls, which have continued to expand to accommodate an ever-growing population. Poligny is full of magnificent remains from this golden age. But even more than that, this tour offers you the chance to relive the day-to-day adventures of the people of Poligny. From the many fires that shaped the town, to match smuggling and the trial of a mysterious band of werewolves, come and discover the extraordinary history of Poligny!
Your guide
I'm passionate about old stones and the myriad adventures they tell us about, and I love helping curious visitors discover my region. Over the past decade, I've given guided tours of many of the tourist sites in the Franche-Comté region, including the ancient theatre at Mandeure, the château at Montbéliard, the homes of Louis Pasteur and the Hérisson waterfalls.
I work rigorously with sources to present facts and events as faithfully as the past has bequeathed them to us, while never forgetting what makes history so special: unusual anecdotes, colourful characters and the exoticism of bygone eras yet still so close to us.
Guided tours are available all year round, with a choice of fixed times:
