Village de Vaux en Bugey
The village was Dauphinois, Savoyard and then French in 1601.
The village has partly kept the memory of its oval shape, heritage of its medieval past.
The walk, from the narrow streets to the heights, or on the hamlets, is very pleasant in all seasons. The numerous views over the village, the vineyards or the meadows make it a peaceful and rejuvenating place.
From its past, the village has also preserved a beautiful chapel: Notre Dame de Nièvre, which was once a popular place of pilgrimage.
The rural population practised mixed farming: stockbreeding, cereal and market gardening, viticulture and forestry.
The subsoil was also exploited: first iron ore from 1824 to 1865, then gas from 1906 to 1961. Vaux en Bugey was also the first natural gas deposit to be exploited in France.
