Throughout the 18th century, Besançon underwent unprecedented urban transformations in line with the political, economic and social context of its incorporation into France.
The desire to embellish the town, reflected in the numerous architectural competitions organised by the Besançon Academy of Sciences and Belles Lettres and the desire of homeowners to redo the facades of their houses, should not obscure another reality: that of a town deeply marked by rurality.
The presence of vines in the town, albeit to a lesser extent than in previous centuries, as well as the numerous vegetable gardens behind the courtyards and the presence of chicken coops, stables and barns at the back of the plots, all bear witness to the desire of the people of Besançon to be self-sufficient.
This walk through the city will give you a chance to rediscover Besançon from the angle of the countryside in the city.
