The peat bogs: a rare and vulnerable ecosystem
CRT Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

These gems of the Jura Mountains are unknown to many, but oh so precious!

The fascinating peat bog ecosystems are truly the lungs and biodiversity havens of the region. They regulate water levels in their surroundings and act as carbon stores, which makes them real assets in the fight against global warming!

Within this wild, untouched habitat hides a host of rare wildlife and plants which, in certain places, can be observed close-up from the stilted walkways. Keep your eyes peeled, breathe deeply and enjoy!

"Exploring a peat bog is like plunging into a world where each step reminds us how important it is to preserve this unique, vulnerable and endangered wilderness."

For an eco-friendly holiday in the Jura Mountains, look out for these certification labels

The mountains benefit from an abundance of quality labels and environmental initiatives, so it can be tricky to know what to look for. For a holiday with a commitment, here are the main environmental distinctions to be found in the Jura Mountains

  • European Ecolabel: this logo with the little flower certifies that your accommodation has made a promise to save water and energy, recycle waste, use eco-labelled products and serve meals prepared from local and/or organic ingredients.
  • Green Key: to obtain this label, an establishment must meet the same criteria as for the European Ecolabel but also set itself apart by offering high standards in terms of living environment and an educational approach to promote eco-awareness and provide specific training for employees.
  • Gîtes Panda and Ecogites®: the former meet High Quality Envronmental (HQE) standards (meaning they are designed with techniques and/or materials recognised as having a low environmental impact), while the latter offer an experience at one with nature (in the heart of a nature park, protected area, etc.).
  • Accueil Paysan: a change of scene is provided by this network of rural operators with an eco-friendly approach who invite you to share their community life. There's no better way to discover the Jura Mountains in all their authenticity!

Please note: eco-friendly accommodation with a responsible approach does not necessarily display a certification label. Some providers simply don't have the means, the time or the desire to engage with such initiatives.
