Château de Moncey

-

Château de Moncey itself came into being following the purchase in 1789 of the fiefdom of Moncey by Bon Adrien Jannot, who was born in 1754 in the village of Moncey, then part of the parish of Palise.
The original building was a 17th-century coaching inn to which the Bisontin architect Lapret added two towers, giving it the name of château.
What remains of the coaching inn are two large vaulted stables separated by a paved barn and a large vaulted cellar with a storey for storing grain. The remodelled dwelling features an entrance hall with an original stairway adorned with a wrought iron gate from the 17th century, followed by rooms with painted wood panelling.
Little maintained in the 20th century and in a very poor state of repair, it had to be saved to prevent the amputation of its surrounding wall and its Louis XIV-period gates by a municipal demolition order to widen the public highway in 1989. To counter this demolition, the château and its wall were protected by being listed as a historic monument.
Following the purchase by the current owner, restoration work was undertaken to bring the Château du Maréchal Moncey back to life.
The interior has been restored to its original condition and furnished as it might have been originally.
You can book a guided tour led by the owner. He will talk passionately about the château and Marshal Moncey.
He will tell you not only about his life in the service of France and his village, but also about the local craft industry of his time in Franche Comté.
Bookings must be made with the Doubs Baumois Tourist Office.
