Built in the 12th century, this castle was modified by the abbots of Saint-Claude who owned the seigneury of the Tour-du-Meix. This fortress controlled the cluse de la Pyle which was one of the entrances to their vast domain of the Haut-Jura
The castle was destroyed during the Ten Years' War and was never rebuilt.
The 12km hiking trail "les Falaises du Surchauffant" takes you past the remains of the castle. It starts at the entrance of the Surchauffant campsite.
