Creux Maldru

-

Located in the heart of the vast Mont-Noir forest, between the communes of Foncine-le-Haut and Chapelle-des-Bois, the Creux Maldru exudes an undeniable mystical aura. In times of war and religious persecution, this cave, some ten metres deep, was a place of refuge for many refugees, including 4 priests who hid there from 1791 to 1793.

From the Refuge Chez Valentin, follow the GR signs (red and white) to "Sur les Gîts", then to the "Chemin du Creux Maldru" sign. Then take the path deep into the forest to reach the site, following the yellow markings.

Once there, you find yourself on the edge of a giant funnel-shaped chasm, with a circumference of 28 m at the top and just 6 m at the bottom. The more adventurous can climb a ladder that leads to
2 surprising "rooms": the first, with 7 stone steps, contains a kind of altar, with a cross carved into its wall.
carved into its wall. As for the second room, it probably served as a living quarters for the unfortunate refugees.
It's a mysterious place that's ideal for a summer stroll, if you're looking for a bit of fresh air and a bit of history...
